About Kootenay Kissed Havanese

Breeding dogs was a lifelong goal of mine, planned for when I retired or was mostly retired. This allows me to devote myself completely to my dogs and to each litter of pups, and to giving them the best start possible. I'm able to use my 20 years of experience working with small animals (both domesticated and wild) in the film industry, and all my life of working with animals on a farm, especially dogs, to giving a strong start to all my pups.

Why Havanese?

I had always been a 'big dog person', but for many reasons I needed to find the perfect small dog.

I needed a dog small enough to easily bathe during pollen season or when they came into contact with anything I was allergic to.

I also needed a dog that wasn't going to shed and create dust bunnies all over the house.

Dogs that would be easy to travel with, and that I could take in the cabin of a plane with me.

A dog that looked like a 'small big dog', that had a cute 'shaggy dog' look, was clever, had lots of spunk, and wasn't known as a yappy breed.

A breed that didn't have high exercise needs, but could readily keep up on an all day hike if that's what was needed.

One that was friendly, loved children and one that was really really cute and would stay cute. I didn't want buggy eyes or a squished up nose.

I wanted a dog that even a 'big dog person' could look at and say, "awe! What a great dog! If I ever got a small dog, that's what I'd want".

Our promise

To ensure their health, and their mental and emotional well-being, first and foremost.

To only breed our girls to a healthy male that is of the highest quality and is the best example of the breed, that will compliment her and all her qualities.

To only plan litters when I'm able to devote myself 100% to her and her pup's well being and learning.

To make a life long commitment to her pups so my arms are open if they should ever need to come back home.

And, of course, to always shower them with my love and reverent gratitude for the joy they bring to mine and other's lives.

Raising our pups

Each litter is carefully planned and we only have one, or two litters a year.

The first two weeks the pups and mum start out in a bedroom that is designated 'maternity ward' and I sleep in there with them.

At 3 weeks I start the process of teaching them to use one designated area for potty business.

By four weeks they are moved to the main area of the house for socialization. The new pen is set up with 2 crates in it, a play area, and a place to lay with mum, and a separate potty area.

By the time they are six weeks old they are running all over the mainfloor of the house for several hours out of each day and using a pee pad just outside their pen.

After six weeks old, weather permitting, they are spending a lot of time each day outdoors as well, exploring and running around my large yard with the 'big' dogs.

My pups are well adjusted, confident, and friendly to everyone, crate trained and completely understand using a designated area for their potty business. It's just up to you to teach them where that is at their new home, and work within the confines of their ability as small puppy, to 'hold it in', in order to take them there in a timely fashion, and on a regular basis.

Where my own personal experience and touch of 'magic' comes in, is in the rearing of the pups and placing the right pup in the right home. I know what makes a good dog and what makes good parents! I spend all day, everyday with the puppies while rearing them so I really know their personalities, and I will work tirelessly with the new parents to ensure a happy life long relationship with their new family member.

Testimonial

We brought one of Kootenay Kissed Havanese, Poppy, home October 2017. We hired a dog consultant who has trained and offered in-home counselling for over 30 years on the North Shore in Vancouver and with her experience and expertise she could see that Poppy had a wonderful disposition, which she felt was the result of having a knowledgable and responsible breeder. She could see Poppy came from a loving home and was well taken care of. Jaqueline is a trustable breeder. She answered all our questions and continued to keep the line of communication open after we brought our little girl home.  Twice, we flew our Poppy back to Jaqueline for doggy daycare when we were travelling for long periods of time. Our consultant felt it was the best thing to do for her to socialize and visit with her family. Last summer, we decided to get a second pup so that Poppy could have a companion. Franky is Poppy's half brother and they get along very well. Both are healthy, happy, and very well adjusted and socialized. Both have completed our family and we are truly grateful for Jac for blessing us with her dogs.
